Advanex offers STI Taps in four styles:
- Standard Plug (4-Thread Chamfer): Easy starting for through-holes and blind holes.
- Standard Bottoming (2-Thread Chamfer): Ideal for blind holes that are drilled to a minimum depth.
- Spiral Pointed Plug (4-Thread Chamfer): Free-cutting for use in long through-holes and in blind holes with chip clearance.
- Spiral Flute Bottoming (2-Thread Chamfer): Pulls chips out of deep or blind holes in soft materials. (Not available in metric sizes)
Special Notes:
- The 'H' limit number (last digit in the Part Numbers) indicates the number of 0.0005 inch increments the tap's maximum diameter is above the basic (minimum)
- The Class of Fit specifies the pitch diameter tolerance of the tapped hole, with 3B (4H for metric) being the tighter range usually specified in military & aerospace applications, and when consistant locking torque is desired when using KATO locking CoilThread Inserts. Class 2B (5H for metric) taps provide a broader tolerance range or looser fit, and are normally specified in commercial & industrial applications. The class of fit of the installed inserts are controlled by the class of fit of the tap.

Advanex STI (Screw Thread Insert) Thread Plug Gauges are used to check the accuracy of the tapped hole. If the tapped hole is correct, the finished thread will also be accurate when the insert is installed. It is not necessary to gauge the installed insert. Please note that both "Working Gauges" and "Reference Gauges" are shown tabulated. Working Gauges are recommended for use with production since their greater tolerance allows for more wear. Reference Gauges have pitch diameters at or very close to basic sizes and are to be used as master gauges.
Special Notes:
- The Working Gauge "GO" member has a 0.0002 wear allowance on the pitch diameter.
- Guaging of the tapped thread is specified because a standard gauge may not freely enter an installed insert. The insert will seat itself once a bolt or screw is installed and tightened (Reference MS33537)
- KATO STI Guages comply with MIL-T-21309
- The "GO" member checks basic pitch diameters, major diamter minimum and lead. The "HI" or "NOT-GO" member check maxiumum pitch diamter. The Minor diameter must be checked seperately with a graduated pin set, for example.
